3D Baby Book Cake

17 May

This is a cake that I created for a baby Shower, I always love to do cakes that are not seen everyday. I will give the directions so that if anyone else would like to create this cake you will know how I did it, then you can add your own little touches.

Items needed to create your own Sculpted Baby Book Cake

A baked cake in any size that you choose

White Fondant and any other color of your choice

Pizza Cutter or a Knife

Cookie Cutters Letters or whatever kind you may already have on hand

Fondant Smoother

2 spatulas

corn starch or powder sugar to dust your work surface when rolling out the fondant

As for the cake itself I used an11 x 15 sheetcake cut in half then stacked to get the desired thickness I needed. However if you don’t have that size pan available you could always use a regular baking pan that you may have already, most people have a 9 x 11 baking pan that they bake cakes in. That size could be used, then cut in half and stack those pieces together to give you a nice thickness for a book shape, you may want to trim the sides to come up with a shape that works for you. it may help to look at the shape of a medium sized book you have and recreate the size and shape of that.

The next step is to cover the cake in an icing of your choice, then you need to cover with white fondant.

Use the pizza cutter or knife to imprint lines very close together on 3 sides of the cake to give you the look of pages in a book, don’t push too hard though or you will end up with holes in your fondant.

Next you will need to roll out enough fondant in a square shape to make the cover of the book. It’s really important to put down plenty of corn starch or powder sugar when rolling out the fondant because you wil need to wrap part of the fondant over the cake. Next I used 2 spatulas to pick up the cake and place it on top of the fondant square, place the cake about an inch from the right edge of the fondant. Then you will need to carefully pick up the left side of the fondant and lay it over top of the cake to complete the cover of the book, if you have too much fondant hanging over then you can always trim it to be equal to the bottom part of the cover.

Use a fondant smoother to smooth out the fondant on the top of your book cake, then use it to create a spine edge on the top edge of the cake, by looking at my cake picture you can see where exactly to do this. I then left the right corner of my fondant flipped up to add detail to the book.

I used cookie cutter letters to cut out the word baby for the spine of the book, you could use whatever cookie cutter shapes you may have on hand if you do not have letters, such as maybe a flower, a rattle, a star, a heart. It’s your cake so personalize to your liking it doesn’t have to be for a baby shower, you could do a book for a graduate, a gardening book, or someones favorite book. The ideas are limitless as to what kind of book you can create.

The baby I have on top was sculpted out of gumpaste, however if you are not able to do that then use a your cookie cutters to cut out a shape of something you like and place on the top. Another good idea is using the edible markers that are on the market and available at most stores, I bought a set at my local grocey store in the cake isle. You could write whatever you would like on the top of the book which would give you a differnt effect.

If you have any questions along the way should you decide to create a book cake just drop me an email and I will get back to you. If you do a book cake be sure to email me a picture I would love to see your creation, until next time happy creating!!

Sleeping Gumpaste Babies

16 May

These sleeping gumpaste babies were made as a caketopper for an upcoming cake.  I worked on sculpting these 2 babies for a few months, everytime I made the faces they would look like little aliens and I felt as if I would never be able to get the faces correct. I had been wanting to finally get these faces right instead of creating my very own baby aliens although there is nothing wrong with a cake showcasing baby aliens. Finally one day when I least expected I finally started to see a baby face emerge as I was sculpting and these 2 little babies are what I ended up with, I have yet to attempt making these kind of babies again but I know I will have to give it another try in the future. And I will end up with faces that are completely different from these two.  I must say it was worth the time it took to finally come up with sculpted babies to add to my cakes, I am so glad I tried, because if I would not have tried I would have never realized that I could do it.

If there is something you have been wanting to learn in cake decorating but are afraid it will not work for you, or that you just don’t know how to do it, make the decision that you will do it regardless of how you feel. If you don’t try you will never know the abilities that are waiting deep inside you just yearning to get out, and when it does it will surprise even you, there may even be a time when you will think to yourself, wow, I did that. That will be one of those moments in life that you will never forget and once you master that particular thing there will be another around the corner tapping on the door of your creativity urging you to step out and try something else that is new to you.

So make it a point to try something new this week that you have never tried it will be worth trying in the long run. Good luck and Happy Creating!!!

Sugar Flowers in a Cake Purse

14 May

This is actually a cake that was made to look like a Purse with lots of gumpaste (sugar) flowers bursting from the top of the purse.  To create this cake I baked 3 cakes in loaf pans and leveled them flat so that they would stack then covered the emtire cake with Buttercream. The next step was to cover the cake with vanilla fondant. I cut out blue fondant flower shapes to decorate the outer sides of the purse. to create the purse handles I actually use a play doh factory, kids toy to make the rope shapes with fondant, but it is important to allow the ropes to set up a bit before attaching to the cake.

The gumpaste (Sugar) flowers were all hand made. I especially love creating the roses and calla lillies, however all flowers are beautiful to me. Which is why I designed this cake showcasing the beauty of sugar flowers bursting up and out of a purse but not a real purse but a Cake Purse.

Their are many things that can be done with cakes with just a little creativity and a few tools. I love the look on a persons face when they receive a cake that is not the usual grocery store cake that has been frozen for days before we purchase them, but sold to us as a fresh cake.  Whenever people recieve a custom designed cake it makes them feel so special which I think we all deserve to feel special more often then not. Custom cakes should tell a story about the person they were created for. A great example would be this Tiffany Box Cake that I created for my cousin Rhonda who loves EVERYTHING from Tiffany’s and it’s her favorite store. This cake clearly tells a story about Rhonda and the things in life that she loves.

Diaper Bag Cake

14 May

Diaper Bag Cake with handmade fondant bottle, baby keys, blocks, pacifier, and baby sandals.

It\'s a cake

This cake was designed for my brother and his wifes baby shower. To create the diaper bag itself I baked 2 cakes in an 11 x 15 cake pan, then cut those cakes into 3 sections, iced in buttercream and stacked them to the height that I had chosen for the diaper bag. Once stacked I covered the cake in Buttercream Icing. The next step was to cover with fondant, prior to putting the fondant on the cake I used a rolling pin with designs to imprint that design on the fondant. Then I cut a baby t-shirt out of fondant, a baby blanket and a hat out of fondant as well, then these things were laid on the top of the bag to give the appearance of them hanging out of the top of the diaper bag. I cut a long strip of fondant to create the handle for the bag and then draped it. Several days prior to making the cake I made the baby sandals out of gumpaste so they would harden up in time for the baby shower. The bottle was made taking alum. foil formed in the shape of a baby bottle then covering with fondant. The pacifier was hand made using fondant as well as the baby keys which I just used different cookie cutters to cut shapes out to form keys. I cut out white fondant shapes to create small wash clothes and put them in the side pocket of the diaper bag. The baby figurine to the left of the diaper bag was made a week in advance using gumpaste to sculpt a baby girl holding a blanket.

My Little Garden Cake

14 May

The Garden Getaway Cake

Angel GirlGarden cakeGarden CakeThis Whimisical Garden cake is one that I must say I had the most fun creating because of all the details that I added. Starting with the Angel Girl sitiing on a tree stump, the little butterfly on her arm, all the little garden animals just being themselves and of course it was a birthday cake so I added a miniature birthday cake on top of the tree stump which seems to be attracting the bumble bees, bear, mouse, and the butterflies which are all looking to be a part of the celebration. There is a path that leads to the rear of the garden and who else to greet you at the beginning of the path but a small puppy I call Teddy. He is the perfect one to greet all who come for a visit to the little getaway garden.  The garden itself showcases all the beautiful flowers that have bloomed and of course the bright green grass which is like walking on cotton. Last but not least in the rear left corner there is even a miniature cupcake garden for all those who need a quick little snack as they enjoy their getaway in the whimisical garden.

I love creating cakes that tell a story and this one surely does. The grass on the cake was created with using buttercream icing, the angel girl, animals, bugs and flowers were all hand made using fondant.

How I created this Dooney and Bourke Purse Cake

14 May

Dooney and Bourke Purse Cake.  This sheetcake with a purse was made with half chocolate and half white cakes, the cake was then covered in buttercream and the purse itself which is also a cake which I sculptured into a purse shape to look like a popular Dooney and Bourke purse that has ice cream pops all over. To create this look on the purse I covered the cake with buttercream and allowed it to set up. The next step was to cover with white fondant which is really just a sugar dough. I then cut ice cream shapes out of different colors of fondant and applied to the purse to create a replica of the designer Dooney and Bourke purse which can be purchased at finer department stores. The handle of the purse was also made out of fondant and dried over top of a large cup to get the rounded shape. The sugar pearls were hand strung with fondant and the ring and earrings were handmade out of fondant as well.
