What is that one Cake Decorating problem you just cannot seem to figure out?

24 Aug

Hey everybody, hope all is well with everyone. WOW isn’t it hard to believe it’s the end of August. My boys are back in school now which allows me more time to devote to my greatest inspiration which I’m sure you all know by now is Cake Decorating!! I have been working very hard on the new website and I am just as excited as many of you have indicated to me. I would have never thought that It would take sooo long to design in addition the taping of the how-to videos, tutorials, and the articles that I have been typing up. I do know that in the end it will be worth it.

I was thinking about you all this morning and thought it might be of great help to you if I posted answers to one of your most important cake decorating questions. Maybe you are having a tough time with buttercream icing, or you just can’t seem to get your fondant to look a certain way and so on. You tell me and I will do my best to help you with any cake decorating issues you may be encountering. I know how tough it can be when you are learning something new and just cannot figure it out, so maybe this would be a great way for me to help you by posting answers to your question. I do NOT know everything nor will I ever, however I will do my best to get the answer for you if I do not know it myself. I am like you I learn more and more with each day, which I guess is one of the things I love about Cake Decorating. There is always something new around the corner to learn.

If you would like to ask your question by contacting me directly that is just fine you can email me at donnalane7@msn.com.

I will talk to you all soon, I am soo excited to see all of you who have been entering the giveaway, we only have a few more days left!!

Guess what, its that time again for a FREE GIVEAWAY!!

Hello my fellow cake buddies like I said previously we are going to have regular givaways. There are 2 different prizes for this giveaway. I know there are some of you who have never tried working with fondant yet so I thought it would be great to giveaway a fondant tool starter package and that is the first prize that will be given. The tools that are included are the very tools that I use on a regular basis…

The fondant tool package includes a

Wilton 3 disc cutter, fondant roller, 8 pc fondant/gumpaste modeling tools, a pkg of ready made Wilton fondant (please only use for decorations or sculpting, don’t use to cover a cake because this fondant taste very bad, I only use it to make my sculptures flowers, or other objects since they are not eaten), and a project tote bag (color shown may not be the color you receive) to put your tools in.  And there is also going to be a bonus that will be included with the fondant tool package.

The second prize that will be given away is a 30 minute phone call to talk to good ole ME!! I have had several people ask me if I would consider giving away a phone call with me so that you can chat with me about cake decorating, gumpaste, fondant or whatever elase you would like to chat about. I know that many of you have lots of questions and I really thought the phone call was a very good suggestion.

I want you all to know that your info is NEVER shared with anyone. Anything that is emailed to me or on my site is kept confidential. I am one of those people that gets furious when my info is sold or shared for anything that I do not agree to.

To enter the giveaway please post a comment indicating which would most interest you, the fondant tools or the free phone call.

The Giveaway will end at Midnight eastern time on August 27, 2008

The (2) winners will be drawn with via a random number generator. The winner will be posted on my front page on August 28th. I will also be contacting the winners via email.

I must have your email address so that I can contact you and get your shipping details, also I pay for all the shipping cost myself. There is never a cost to you. I have seen many giveaways that give you something that is free but then they require you to pay for the shipping fees, that just doesn’t seem free to me!!

Good Luck to everyone, I will talk to you soon

Little Shrey and The Puppies- All hand sculpted with Gumpaste

19 Aug

Here is my latest project I made for a Little boy named Shrey.A boy and his puppies This cake topper that I hand sculpted from sugar consisted of 6 puppies in different positions and a little boy figurine to represent little Shrey. Shrey is from New York and his mommy wanted to make sure his first birthday was a very special day so she contacted me to create a sugar sculpture of little Shrey and the little puppies were taken from his birthday party invitation. A report from little Shreys mommy indicated that the party went great and all loved the sugar figurines, and most importantly the cake looked great!

Latest Gumpaste Baby and How To Preserve as a Keepsake

13 Aug

This gumpaste baby is my latest creation that I made for a cake that I have coming up in the next few weeks.  I love to create baby sculptures they are always soo cute. Each and every one I do always ends up looking so different, I don’t think I have created any two alike.

Alot of people are not aware that you can actually keep most sugar sculptures as a keepsake. As long as they do not get wet they will last indefinately. I always add tylose powder to my fondant which acts as a hardener as well as helps in areas that have alot of humidity. I have some of my very first sugar sculptures that I created when I first got started last year and they look just as good as they did the day I made them. Its always a good idea if you can enclose them in something which will keep the dust off of them as such, its not like you can just pop them into the sink and wash them, lol! Last year I made my cousin Sue a  Wizard of Oz cake and made sugar sculptures of Dorothy, The Tin Man, The Lion, The Scare Crow and of course Toto in a small basket. My cousin kept all of the sugar sculptures and has them sitting in her curio cabinet on display she says that she lightly dusts them once a week and they are still in perfect condition.

If you would like to keep sugar sculptures as a keepsake

Make sure you wipe all icing off of them once them are removed from the cake

Do not get them wet or use water on them for any reason, they are made of sugar dough and will soften up and fall apart.

I store some of mine in shoe boxes up on a closet shelf.

Keep sugar sculptures out of direct sunlight because it will cause the colors to fade.

It’s best if they are displayed in a glass cabinet or one of those glass dome covers that are used for displaying dolls.

My Latest Gumpaste Figurine Family

My Latest Gumpaste Figurine Family

My Latest Gumpaste Figurine Family

Here are my latest figurines that I made for a girl who was makng a cake that was a pickup truck and she wanted figurines to represent her, her huband and sister in law. Each person is sitting on something that they enjoy in life such as the case of Heineken Beer, The Hershey Box and the Tiffany Ring Box. Each of the figurines were custom made so that they could be seated in the back of her pickup truck cake. Pretty cool idea I must say. Not my idea but hers!! These were alot of fun to make. I wanted each person to show their own individual personality. I even made sure the 2 girls fingernails were painted red. Gumpaste is so fun to work with once you get the hang of it there are just soo many things that you can make. How you all have had a great week talk to you soon!!

What’s in my Cake Decorating Bag?

7 Aug

What’s in my cake decorating bag is a new weekly post that I will be doing that will introduce you to different kinds of cake decorating tools that I use on a regular basis. I will explain what the tool is, what the tool does and most importantly where you can buy that particular tool. Some of the tools that I will be sharing with you are not traditional cake decorating tools, they are everyday items that I have adapted for using in cake decorating.

I remember when I first got started I was so clueless about most of the tools on the market. I bought many of them and they sat in a drawer for months. I had never ending guilt trips take over my mind because I felt that I was wasting money by not using the tools that were just collecting dust. The reason the tools sat in a drawer was because I did not know how to use them. There have been times that I have asked other cake decorators how to do different things and they flat out said that they don’t share their cake decorating info with anyone.  So alot of what I have learned has been trial and error. I have done some of the craziest things let me tell ya. But I want to make sure you know as much as possible about the different kinds of cake decorating tools that are available so that you will not be like I was and most importantly will be well informed about all aspects of cake decorating.

Ok, the first tool I am gong to cover this week is a Rubber Tipped ModelingTool which is usually used in working with clay however it is awesome when working with gumpste and fondant! It is one of my most favorite tools in my cake decorating bag. I use them when working with fondant/gumpaste on my figurines and they are great for getting to very small areas. There are several different types of Rubber Tipped Modeling Tools on the market.

The first one which is my favorite one is called a Taper Tool. It is a pointed rubber tip that I use to create noses on my figurines, to get in between the fingers on my figurines, to get into small detailed areas on cakes and cookies. I also use this tool when making gumpaste flowers to seperate petals, to create impression marks and so on.

The second one is called a Flat chisel tool and it is great for pressing fondant peices together, to make mouths on my figurines, and differnt little details on gumpaste flowers.

The third one is called a Cup Round and I use it to make eyes, and ears on my figurines as well as many other details on my figurines.

The fourth one is called an Angle Chisel and I use it to make the fingers and toes on my figurines as well as the eyes sometimes and also its great for making the creases in the clothing on figurines to make them look more lfelike.

The fifth one is the Cup Chisel and it is perfect for making lips, adding details to the hands and ears on figurines. As well as other small impression details on cakes.

All of these tools are available at Misterart.com and they come in 3 different sizes

The Rubber Tipped Tools range in price from $4-8.00 at misterart.com

Size 0 (small) is approximately 1/4 in. in diameter
Size 2 (medium) is approximately 3/16 in. in diameter
Size 6 (large) is approximately 5/16 in. in diameter

I have purchaed one of each size and I must say the size that works the best for gumpaste/fondant is the size 0 they are small enough to provide all the details that you will want to add to your figurines, cakes and cookies.Perfect for the smal details on Gumpaste/fondant Figurines
