Chocolate Buttercream Icing

Many of you have asked for a Chocolate Buttercream Recipe….This is not MY recipe however it is one that I use and I love it……so I thought I would share it with all of you! I do not remember where I found this recipe but I will say it was online somewhere in the wonderful world of the internet…lol.

Ingredients…….

6 sticks of butter (I use salted) or 3 cups….. (whichever way you want to measure)

3 Tablespoons of milk

2 teaspoons of vanilla

1/2 cup of cocoa powder (The special Dark Type), I have used the regular cocoa powder as well, either way is great!

1- 11.5 oz Bag of Ghirardelli Chocolate  or a comparable chocolate, you can use milk choc. or whatever you would like

2 LB bag of Powdered Sugar…..2 lbs is equal to 8 cups

…..Instructions……..

Mix the butter (softened), milk,. vanilla, and cocoa powder in the mixer until thoroughly mixed.

Melt the Chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals until melted

Once the chocolate is melted you then add it to the other ingredients that are in the mixer

Then finally add the powdered sugar a little at a time to the mixer making sure that you allow it to mix thoroughly

Notes……….

If your icing is too thick add another teaspoon of milk.

If you want your icing to be very dark brown you can add 3 drops of black food coloring as well as a teaspoon of brown and make sure to mix thoroughly.

    Hi, in the NOTES…. You said to use a teaspoon of ‘ brown’. if I want it darker, what is brown please??

    I’m from montreal i would like to know where I can find Tylose powder. Also the chocolate buttercream frosting, can i just use cocoa and instead of regular milk can I use condenced milk??? thanks

      Hello Teri,

      Yes you can just use cocoa for the choc buttercream frosting…..and as far as using the condensed milk in place of the milk I have no done this myself but I would think it would taste great, however I would do an experiment and try it out first to see how it works…..I would use less of the condensed milk since it is stronger than regular milk.     You have very nice web site. The chocolate icing recipe calls for a bag of Ghirardelli chocolate. What is the weight of this bag of chocolate? Thank you, Jay

          The size of the bag of chocolate for the icing recipe is 11.5 oz bag.
