Latest Figurines and Auction at Duke University

Santa And his Reindeers

These are my latest Gumpaste Figurines that I created for an upcoming Auction that will take place at Duke University Medical Center. John Hillson an RN in the Oncology Unit from Duke University emailed me a few months ago wanting to learn how to create Gumpaste Figurines to go along with his Gingerbread House North Pole Scene that he creates each year to raise money to purchase Christmas Gifts for those who are in the hospital battling cancer. This really touched my heart so much so I told John that I would donate a Santa and a couple Reindeers to go with his scene. I lost my Dad, Grandma and my Grandpa to cancer as well as many friends and in addition my aunt Donna and the best uncle in this entire world, my uncle Roy are battling cancer right now so this is something I feel very passionate about. And to know that there are those out there who care for our loved ones and go out of their way to provide something special for them at Christmas means the world to me. So I pray that these figurines will help raise lots of money so those who are dealing with cancer will receive a gift to show them that they are very special.

John Hillson I want you to know that you are an Angel from Heaven for all that you do for those that you take care of each day at work. I’m sure that your job is not one that most of us could handle one day a week let alone fulltime so I want you to know we are soo grateful to not only you but all of the other Nurses and other hospital workers who give of themselves everyday to care for our sick loved ones and to make sure that they know, especially on the Holidays just how special and important they truly are. Thanks so much for all you do each day and may you be blessed 100 times over!!!

If you have a family member that is battling cancer make sure to take the time this Holiday season to let them know how special they are to you.

Gumpaste Trick or Treat Figurine Cake Topper

With the feel of fall in the air and halloween just around the corner, I thought I would create this little boy who I call Billy. He is ready for trick or treating with his pumpkin bucket prepared to hold the candy he collects and clothed in a cute little Ghost costume.

My Latest Gumpaste Animal Cake Toppers

4 Sep

I created these gumpaste animals for a baby shower cake that I will be doing in a few weeks.
Seems as if more and more people are ordering sugar cake toppers for their cakes. Instead of doing a giraffe that is standing like you normally see, I decided to create a giraffe that looks as if he is laying on his stomach, I think he turned out great!! The other animal is a hippo that was replicated after a little stuffed animal. And the frog, I wanted to create with large bug eyes. I hope you all enjoy looking at my figurines and that they give you some ideas for your cakes in the future. When the cake is complete I will make sure I post a picture of it for you all to see. Happy creating!!

Gumpaste Sculpted Animals and Figurines Are All The Rage in Cake Decorating

The world of Cake Decorating has changed so much over the years. Normally when you wanted a cake you went to a bakery or your local grocery store and ordered a basic sheet cake with roses on it.  However cake decorators have changed the face of cake decorating with their skills and have taken sugar to a whole new level. Cakes now come in all shapes and sizes from cakes with a soccor ball on top to imitation designer purses. Sculpting has become one of the lastest crazes in cake decorating with cakes that are 2d, 3d and sculpted to look like the everyday things that are all around us in life. I love to scult cakes into shapes that would a person say, “Is that really a cake”.

Sculpting figurines and animals are becoming all the rage these days and are becoming one of my most requested designs for cakes. These animals and figurines are made with a sugar dough by hand sculpting. Not all cake decorators offer cakes with sculpted sugar animals and figurines but as the demand continues there will be more cake decorators willing to learn this skill. I don’t think this craze will come and go.  I believe it’s going to get bigger and bigger because of the ability to personalize cakes to reflect something that is important to someone, such as a cake showcasing a sculpted man( dad )using his power tools to cut wood for a cabinet that he is making. To a cake for mom that showcases a string of sugar pearls which is her favorite necklace and a basket of flowers that are made from sugar as well.

The sky is the limit when it comes to using sugar dough to decorate a cake. This is so exciting, as a cake  decorator who designs cakes that tell a story, I never get tired of designing cakes with sugar dough sculpted figurines, animals and flowers.

So when deciding on your next cake design use your imagination, you don’t have to settle for a grocery store that is full of preservatives and has possibly been sitting in a freezer for up to 60 days at a time. Find a local cake decorator who specilizes in sculptured cake designs. There is nothing like presenting a cake for that next baby shower that is actually a diaper bag made from cake and everyone at the shower thinks the diaper bag is the real thing but is actually a cake made to look like a diaper bag.

The above pictures are some examples of sugar figurines that I have designed for different cakes I have made in the past.
